Colin-on-Cars – New Peugeot 208 launches locally

Peugeot’s model revamp for the South African market continues with the introduction of the new 208 that became the best-selling car in Europe for the first quarter of this year – in addition to garnering a number of awards.

It was named European Car of the Year for 2020 and Women’s Car of the Year for 2020 and sold more than 250 000 units in the first quarter 2021.

The sharper and more distinctive looks stem from a new front bumper, wider, fully integrated grille, fang effect daytime running lights, new two-tone headlamps and restyled front fog lamps.

In GT trim it has gloss black mirror covers and gloss black wheel arches, while tyre choices are 15-inch, 16-inch or 17-inch rims depending on trim level.

The lion-claw motif has been redesigned at the rear that now sports LED lights Redesigned lion-claw-motif, rear LED lights, while two-tone black and chrome headlamps at the front of the vehicle, create a sharper, sleeker front face with excellent visibility. The Peugeot i-Cockpit, with its signature compact steering wheel, has a 3D-Digital heads-up instrument panel and large (up to) 10-inch touch screen, while seats and upholstery are available in a choice of premium materials with topstitching.

The latest incarnations of the 208 are powered by PureTech 1,2-litre engines in both naturally aspirated and turbo-charged formats mated to a manual or automatic gear box.

The 208 Active is fitted with a PureTech 3-cylinder engine offering 55 kW version, while the turbo version provides 74 kW version on the Allure Manual, and 96 kW guise for the Allure Automatic and range-topping GT.

The 74 kW engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, whereas the 96 kW is combined with an EAT 6 automatic gearbox (Efficient Automatic Transmission 6-speed) which uses Quick Shift technology for faster changing.

The Mirror Screen feature works using Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and driving aids include expanded recognition of road signs and markings, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Alert, Automatic Switching Headlights, Hill Start Assist, Active Safety Brake and Visiopark 1.

The Peugeot 208 features a 180° video camera on the boot hatch, while Park Assist sensors provide information including an overhead view of the vehicle.
